About The Anthem Project

We have screened the documentary Anthem for audiences many times, and the most common comment has been "This belongs in the schools." We agree!

The Anthem Project is an online resource for teachers with lesson plans, videos based on Make Your Mark Media's independent film Anthem that will help them explore the story of The Star-Spangled Banner in their classrooms. Created in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education and Anne Arundel County Public Schools, this project is funded by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and private donations to Make Your Mark Media.

Anthem was broadcast on Maryland Public Television in December 2012, and a national public television broadcast is planned for the summer 2013. This independent documentary film tells the story behind Francis Scott Key's creation of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and explores the role of music and patriotism during The War of 1812. Anthem features musical performances and interviews with historians and music experts interspersed with maps, documents and rich images of the people, places and events of the era.

Anthem contains a wealth of information presented through interviews, narration and musical performances and is for audiences of all ages. At 61-minutes, the length is a bit cumbersome for use in classrooms. Drawing from the research, artwork, maps, documents and almost 100 hours of interviews, musical performances and location footage obtained for Anthem, Make Your Mark Media can create short films focusing on various aspects of this period in history. Short films from five to fifteen minutes in length have a better chance of holding the attention of younger students, and gives time for discussion before and after. With a combination of music and images, these stories can come alive for students.
