Lesson Plan 8-5: Ode to Francis Scott Key

Biography of the Author of The Star-Spangled Banner

Take a trip through Maryland and you will see buildings, monuments, schools, and a bridge named in honor of Francis Scott Key. There is even a minor league baseball team, the Frederick Keys, named after the famous Maryland lawyer and songwriter. What’s so great about Francis Scott Key and why does he hold a place of honor in Maryland and U.S. history?

In this lesson, students will research the life of Francis Scott Key, an influential lawyer and poet. They will learn what inspired his famous ode to American courage and resilience, as well his life before and after penning The Star-Spangled Banner. Students will write odes or produce multimedia odes to Francis Scott Key based on their biographical research.

This interdisciplinary lesson aligns to Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.
